Research period abroad
1. Finding a University or a Research Centre abroad
As part of your education, the Programme foresees that you spend a period abroad. You can either rely on an institution with which the University of Siena has a cooperation agreement, or find other contacts by yourself.
The University of Siena has several institutional contacts with other Universities abroad.
Two Universities (the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, of Barcelona (Spain), and the Ohio State University (Columbus, USA) have established formal agreements with the University of Siena, and accept excange postgraduate students. The University of Siena is also a member of the Coimbra Group, which gathers a number of long-established prestigious universities throughout Europe. Students may attend taught postgraduate units at other Coimbra Group Universities without payment of fees. Check this web page for more information.
Other institutions, with which the University of Siena has an Erasmus agreement, are listed here (generally, if an Erasmus agreement exists, it is possible to arrange a period for Visiting PhD students too).
These 4 databases describe the type of agreements that exists between the University of Siena and foreign Universities. Some of them are specifically targeted to PhD students, some of them are targeted to students of Political Sciences, others do not address either case. Check out the categories they mention under “Facoltà” and “Tipologia di Collaborazione Internazionale”.
For all additional information on the institutional contacts with Universities abroad, please contact Mrs Katia Medaglini at the International Affairs Office.
You might have a specific interest in working with a professor or at a Department or in another country because of your PhD topic and that University is not included in any of the possibilities mentioned above. If this is the case, we will try to help you as much as possible. However, please bear in mind that it might be difficult to waive the fees that Universities require, especially in theUSA.
For periods beyond 6 months, the stay must be approved by the Board of the Graduate School, which only meets a few times a year. Therefore, if you are planning to spend more than 6 months abroad, you must communicate your plans to the CIRCaP secretary well in advance, to be sure that no bureaucratic problems will arise.
2. Funding your stay abroad
You might need extra funds to support your stay abroad. These are the main possibilities that you might want to explore:
If you receive a grant from the University of Siena, Trento, Molise or Catania, you are entitled to a 50% increase in this grant for periods that you spend abroad. In order to get the grant integration, please follow the procedure described below (3. Paperwork for your period abroad). The increase of the grant will cover a max. 18 months of your period of studies, regardless of how you want to divide them.
There are several grants offered through the University of Siena, especially for research periods in the USA, Australia and Canada. Check them out here
or contact Mrs Katia Medaglini, at the International Relations Office, for more information.
Other opportunities are offered by several institutions, some of which are listed at the following address:

http://www.apsanet.org/opps/grad/grants.cfm (especially for grants to go to the US)
http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/home_en.html.
We strongly recommend that you look for additional sources of funding, especially if you are planning to study in expensive countries, such as the USA or the UK. Generally, calls are issued in September-October for the following year. This requires you to plan your stay abroad well in advance!
