What you do during your Third Year
The third year is devoted to the completion of the research for your thesis and to writing your thesis. You can spend this year or part of it abroad. You are expected to keep close contact with your supervisor and discuss with him/her the advancement of your work.
During the second semester you will again present your research to fellow students and staff at the PhD Colloquium.
In June, you are expected to attend the Graduate conference.
Decisions about when to submit the PhD Thesis to the Committee
There are two alternative deadlines for presenting the final copy of the dissertation. After the completion of your 3rd year, you can submit your PhD either on November 1st of the third year or on March 1st of the fourth year. These are the deadlines for presenting the very final copy.
In order to qualify for November 1st submission, your thesis must be substantially completed by the beginning of September, and your supervisor must deem it ready for submission in November.
In order to qualify for March 1st submission, your thesis must be substantially completed by the beginning of December, and your supervisor must deem it ready for submission in March.

The Committee is composed of 3 members, 1 internal to the University of Siena and 2 external ones, who may also belong to non-Italian universities.
Editing instructions for PhD Theses
PhD theses should not exceed 100.000 words including bibliography, footnotes, etc. It should be printed 1,5 spaced. It must be bound before sending it to the Committee. It can be written in Italian or in English.
