NEW PH.D. PROGRAM IN POLITICAL SCIENCE, EUROPEAN POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The Ph.D. program in Political Science, European Politics and International Relations is a joint doctoral initiative of the University of Siena, the Pisa-based Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the Universities of Florence and Pisa. It builds upon the long term experience in doctoral training of the participating universities and it provides an ideal continuity with the first Italian Ph.D program in political science, the Dottorato in Scienza Politica of the University of Florence, and with the Ph.D in Political Science, Comparative and European Politics of the University of Siena.
The program offers students sound knowledge across the main fields of political science and international relations, ensuring strong command of the most important quantitative and qualitative methods that are required to conduct rigorous and innovative empirical research.
Teaching activities are offered by the universities involved and are fully coordinated and integrated in order to make the best of the specialized skills of each institution. Students will benefit from the stimulating intellectual environment of an international student and faculty community and are encouraged to combine the work for the PhD program with other doctoral-level courses offered by the four institutions.
The main teaching activities will be located in Pisa and Siena, two medium sized university cities with strong historical traditions and rich art treasures, which offer a very favorable environment for study and research. A lively student life takes place in both cities and the international airports of Firenze and Pisa easily connect them with most cities in Europe and elsewhere.

The Institutions

The organizing institutions are consistently ranked among the top Italian institutions of higher education and have a strong tradition of doctoral programs.

Founded in 1987, the Pisa-based Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (SSSA) is a public university that holds a unique position within the Italian higher education system. It is a university in its own right, offering Master’s and PhD programs, whereas the undergraduate programs are run in conjunction with the University of Pisa. The SSSA offers training and postgraduate courses in applied and social sciences: it is an active learning community that cultivates strong scientific interaction between academic staff, researchers and students. In the last research evaluation the SSSA ranked first among small universities in Italy in the area of political science/theory.

The University of Siena is one of the oldest Italian universities and covers most of the study areas but is particularly strong in social sciences, economics, medicine and legal studies. In the last Research Assessment, the Department of Social, Political and Cognitive Sciences (DISPOC) ranked first among the Departments of the University of Siena and among Italy's top five in five areas of research, including political science. The Department includes two laboratories: LAPS (specializing in public opinion research) and COPEI (specializing in comparative political institutions).

The University of Florence in the largest Tuscan University and covers all the academic disciplines. It has a strong tradition in the study of political science owing in particular to the role of Giovanni Sartori, who can be considered the real founder of modern Italian political science. The Department of Political and Social Sciences (DSPS) is among the best in Italy and is particularly strong in the fields of electoral studies, European integration and public policies.

The University of Pisa, which was traditionally the main Tuscan University, is also one of the oldest and best ranked Italian academic institutions. Its Department of Political Sciences is particularly strong in the fields of party politics, the study of political movements and European integration.
