Graduate studies in Siena: an international environment

The recruitment of an international community of students, both for the MA and for the PhD programmes, is among the objectives of the Graduate School.

On average about 12 students enroll in the MA each year, and about 10 students enroll in the PhD. This means that normally about 40-50 students are involved in the graduate community of political science at the University of Siena.

By now 142 students have attended – or are attending – the Graduate school, coming from 30 different countries of Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, East Asia, Australia, and Africa. Excluding Italy, the most represented country is Turkey (14 students), followed by Belgium, Germany and the USA (each with 5 students).

About half of MA students come from Italy, while the other half is equally divided into European Union (23%) and non European Union citizens (26%).

About 60% of PhD students are Italian. Foreign students come from both EU and non EU countries (fig. 2). In the first five years of the PhD programme, only 4 students held a prior degree from the University of Siena.

Also on the side of the teaching staff, the Graduate School has been able to attract a number of prestigious scholars from European as well as American universities. Apart from Prof. Jean Blondel, permanent member of the teaching staff, the following visiting professors have spent a teaching and/or research period in Siena:

David Hine (Christ Church/University of Oxford)
Michael S. Lewis-Beck (University of Iowa)
Luigi Manzetti (Southern Methodist University)
Richard Herrmann (Ohio State University)
Paul Sniderman (Stanford University)
Matti Wiberg (University of Tampere)
Philippe Everts (University of Leiden)
Antony King (University of Essex)
Heinrich Best (University of Jena)
Grant Amyot (Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada)
Richard S. Katz (The Johns Hopkins University)
Jack Veugelers (University of Toronto)
